YEAR 2 PLANNING

TOPIC: ARTICLES

 

INTRODUCTION: Grammar rule.

EG: I saw a lion and an elephant at the zoo. The lion was scary.

 

Remember!

  • We use ‘a’ before a word that starts with a consonant.
  • We use ‘an’ before a word that starts with a vowel.

EG:  I saw a lion and an elephant.

 

  • First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’. After we use ‘the’.

EG: She had a cheese sandwich and crisps for lunch. She didn’t like the sandwich. We stayed in an old hotel. There was a swimming pool in the hotel.

 

We say... We don’t say…

  • I went to Japan (NOT – I went to the Japan.)
  • He played tennis with Ben (NOT – He played tennis with the Ben.)
  • They had breakfast at 9 o’clock (NOT – They had a breakfast at 9 o’clock.)
     

Remember – Some words don’t have an article. We don’t use articles for countries, meals or people.

TOPIC: Healthy eating 

AIMS:

  • To encourage children to make healthy food choices
  • To practice food vocabulary and identify some food categories.
  • To practice simple phrases related to food.

 

INTRODUCTION:

In this lesson, children draw a lunch setting and then play a dice game to decide what to eat from a selection of food which include many healthy choices.

  • You will need a dice and some coloured pencils.
  • Explain that they are going to play a dice game and that it is important that the numbers 1-6 are written on their templates. Go through the possibilities of the kind of food or drink that can be found at each number on the templates.
  • Ask your child to tell you if their suggestions are healthy or not.
  • They can colour in the options they choose.

 

Research typical meals around the world. Talk about what you would normally eat at home.

STAYING HOME

 

TOPIC: Staying home with Sally Nicholls (Book trust).

INFORMATION: Author Sally Nicholls tells us how she and her family pass the days in lockdown – from building pirate ships to reading books together – and how the experience inspired her latest book, ‘Staying Home’.

AIMS: To learn about what mammals are and what their babies look like and how they are born.

NUMBERS

 

TOPIC: Numbers, maths, world records, board games.

AIMS: To help children talk about and use numbers.

            To help children do simple maths in English.

            To develop children’s speaking, listening and writing skills.

 

INTRODUCTION: In this lesson you can play a numbers game and try some maths, listen to and read a story, then play a board game.

 

ACTIVITY 1: Play one of the numbers word games online. This will help your child recognise the number as they hear it and also help them write it in English (e.g eighteen 18). This also helps them differentiate between Tens and Teens as they can see they are written differently in English and numerically.

ACTIVITY 2: Play the ‘Record Breakers’ story. Very large numbers are practiced in the story as the girl tries to break lots of fun world records. Play the story at least twice.

During the first listening ask your child to remember what the world records are.

During the second listening and reading you can ask them to do the matching exercise from the work sheet. The second part of this provides practice in reading and recognising very large numbers.

ACTIVITY 3: Play a game of snakes and ladders. Print a copy of the board game and dice and counters craft activity. Children can cut out and make the dice and counters.

Remind your child that if they land on a ladder they go to the top and a snake they slide down. Playing a game is useful in turn taking and following instructions. “Its my turn/your turn”, “shake the dice”, “move the counter”, “I’ve finished”. It also helps with counting on numbers in order or backwards.

ACTIVITY 1: Decorating eggs whether it be on paper or on the real thing is a fun way for younger children to practise controlling their pencil, drawing straight lines, zigzags, wavy lines and dots. This helps them for when they learn to write.

Draw an outline of an egg shape on paper for children to decorate. Why not begin a zigzag or wavy line for them to complete.

ACTIVITY 2: Colour dictation

Draw a series of small and big Easter eggs and dictate which colours should be used to fill them in.

Practise ‘Big’ and ‘small’ by dictating ‘colour the small egg blue’ or ‘colour the big egg pink and yellow’.

You can continue to build on patterns and colours as children learn to listen to instructions.

ACTIVITY 3: Cooking

If you’re feeling adventurous in the kitchen perhaps consider making your own hot cross buns with your children. I must admit I haven’t tried the recipe unlike the games! However, it would be lovely to see any photos of your baking skills.

TOPIC: Signs of Spring

 

AIMS: To celebrate the coming of spring and vocabulary related to nature

           To talk about the weather and the plants, insects and animals we see on a daily basis

            To develop children’s speaking and observation skills

            To practise present and past tense when reflecting

 

ACTIVITY: This activity is especially useful to see how nature comes to life in this season. Children can identify the objects on their worksheet (if you can print it, if not look at it on their screen) then if possible under the circumstances go outside into your gardens or look at pictures on the internet to see what they can find.

 First get them to tick the weather boxes or point them out, then search for the plants and animals. As 

             time passes theyll be able to spot more and more signs of spring.

Ask your children what season it is and what they know about spring e.g green, rain, new plants, flowers insects and birds. What is the weather like today? if its cloudy and they cant see the sun, they can put a cross in the sunny and rainy boxes and tick the cloudy one.

             Talk about what they saw, was it sunny? was it windy? Did you see a bird/colour/size?
