Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum information

The Early Years Curriculum

Intent

At Priory Common we believe that Early Years is the beginning of the children’s educational journey and it is therefore crucial that we secure a solid foundation for children to build upon.  We believe that all children deserve memorable experiences which allow their natural curiosity and creativity to flourish.

It is our intention that children develop confidence in themselves and their individual abilities, whilst developing a desire to learn and be self-motivated in doing so. We aim for all children to acquire the skills to become independent learners and to develop physically, verbally, socially and emotionally as they do so. All this combined will enable them to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding to thrive within a diverse and constantly changing society.

Implementation

We aim to provide children, with a well-structured, safe, active learning environment both indoors and outdoors. We recognise the importance of giving our children the best possible start to their education by planning and implementing teaching and learning opportunities that support them in reaching their full potential.

The EYFS curriculum consists of 7 key areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

Communication and Language

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

We plan across all 7 areas to provide our children with a broad and balanced curriculum in which they learn new skills and acquire new knowledge. We support all children through this planning to encompass and support the unique needs and interests of each child.

Impact

We work hard to ensure that all children progress across the EYFS curriculum from their differing starting points to reach the Early Learning Goals by the end of the year. We observe children and collect evidence to show progress across all elements of the EYFS curriculum. This is used to inform planning and to enable children to build on and extend their knowledge and understanding.

Progress is tracked to ensure that the rates of progress are good for all children. This includes children within vulnerable groups, for example; those who are disadvantaged or with SEN needs.

By the end of the first year of school at Priory Common we aim for all children to be ready for their next stage of learning as we support them through their transition into Year One.
